EPISODE 1 : FRANCE AND FINLAND COOPERATES IN A 1 BILLION EUROS 10 YEARS EUROPEAN PROJECT ON GRAPHENE
The Graphene Flagship is a Future and Emerging Technology Flagship by the European Commission. It represent a new form of joint, coordinated research on an unprecedented scale, forming Europe’s biggest ever research initiative. It is tasked with bringing together academic and industrial researchers to take graphene from the realm of academic laboratories into European society in the space of 10 years, thus generating economic growth, new jobs and new opportunities. It has a total budget of 1 billion euro, half of which is funded by the European Commission. It is divided into two separate phases with different funding systems. The Flagship was launched in 2013.
The core consortium consists of over 150 academic and industrial research groups in 23 countries. In addition, the project has a growing number of associated members that will be incorporated in the scientific and technological work packages from the Horizon 2020 phase (1 April 2016 – 31 March 2018). It is implemented in six divisions; four scientific and one each for Partnering Projects and Administration.
“The Flagship’s overriding goal is to take graphene, related layered materials and hybrid systems from a state of raw potential to a point where they can revolutionize multiple industries.”
The Graphene Flagship is coordinated by Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden.
