Vuoden ensimmäinen tiedekahvila avautuu 15.2. klo 17 alkaen Ranskan instituutissa (Yrjönkatu 36, 3. krs). Tiedekahvilatapahtumissa Suomen ranskankieliset ja ranskaa taitavat tiedeyhteisön jäsenet voivat kokoontua mukavassa ilmapiirissä, tehdä uusia tuttavuuksia ja vaihtaa kuulumisis uusimmista projekteistaan.

Ensimmäisen tiedekahvilan aiheena on lääketiede, ja se toteutetaan yhteistyössä Coccyx-yhdistyksen kanssa. Juhlistamme samalla sitä, että on kulunut 50 vuotta siitä, kun ensimmäiset suomalaiset lääketieteen opiskelijat aloittivat opintonsa Ranskassa.

Risto Kaaja

Pr. Risto Kaaja got his high-school diploma from the French-Finnish school in Helsinki in 1971 and pursued medical studies at the Faculty of Medicine in Lille in France. He completed his Doctoral Thesis in Lille in 1978, and specialized in internal medicine in 1986 in Helsinki, where he completed his second thesis in 1985. He became a University lecturer in 1996 at the University of Helsinki. He obtained his specialty for hypertension treatment (European Society of Hypertension) in 2001 and for diabetology in 2002. He worked as a consulting internist at the maternity of the Helsinki university hospital for 22 years (1996-2008) and was appointed Professor in Internal Medicine at the University of Turku in 2009. He has been an opponent for ten thesis, including two abroad, and a directed nine. Professor Kaaja has been a member of several medical associations, both local and international. In 2015, he was appointed President of the Finnish Society of Internal Medicine. Professor Kaaja published over 200 original papers and 50 magazines. He is mainly interested in the link between chronic diseases and pregnancy complications (diabetes, gestational hypertension, pre-eclampsia…)

Pregnancy is a source of great stress for the female body. It is a state of immunotolerance, hypervolemia, acquired thrombophilia and resistance to insulin which is a test for several organs. The appearance of diabetes or hypertension during pregnancy can be the first symptom of the metabolic syndrome and is the manifestation of an increase in the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
