« Jouez! – Molière’s journey » aims at displaying the works of Molière, for an hour. This small-scale musical theater performance was born from the collaboration between Elina Mustonen, Johanna Freundlich and Nina Mansikka. The aim of the production is to bring Molière’s timeless characters and the music of the era into a new, fun and easy-to-access way to reach a wide range of audiences.
The show is composed of various scenes from plays by Moliére such as The Imaginary Invalid, Tartuffe, The Miser, The Misanthrope, The School for Wives, Dom Juan, The Learned Ladies, The Affected Young Ladies and The Versailles Impromptu, complemented and mirrored by the rich music of the era.
The music of the performance is composed by Molière’s collaborators: Jean-Baptiste Lully and Marc-Antoine Charpentier, as well as the most important French baroque composers Louis Couper, Jean-Henry d’Anglebert, François Couper and Jean-Babtiste Forqueray. The music of the performance is played with the most popular keyboard player in the era, the harpsichord.
Seamlessly interlinked texts and music are painting a picture of Molière’s life, but above all, of the general and timeless message of his plays.
Molière deals with various aspects of humanity, especially weaknesses, that can be identified throughout the comedy through the most frivolous and anarchist means, giving the presentation endless possibilities for combining texts and music in many different ways.
An important addition to the production’s unprejudiced approach resides in a compact but surprising and inventive costume and set design, which make the show transformative and suitable for a variety of spaces.
