A sensual symphony for eighteen dancers
Combining movement language from ballet and contemporary dance, les Nuits – The Nights is a ballet in several scenes for adult viewers. It was created by French choreographer Angelin Preljocaj to celebrate Marseille’s year as European Capital of Culture in 2013.
Angelin Preljocaj’s own company Ballet Preljocaj has performed the work around Europe, in South Africa and in the USA.
Recommended for children over the age of 12.
Les Nuits is a production by Staatsballett Berlin.
In creating Les Nuits – The Nights, Preljocaj wished to embark on an exploration based on the Arabian Nights. “There’s a lot that is sensual and erotic in those tales, and I wanted to use that in my work. Above everything is the narrator, Sheherazade. I regard her as one of the earliest feminists of the East,” says Preljocaj.
Preljocaj is the child of Albanian Catholic parents and has lived in France all his life. He previously visited the FNB during the directorship of Jorma Uotinen, in 1999.
