François-Auguste Biard: La Laponie Mythique – Mythical Lapland

In 1841, The French artist François-Auguste Biard painted artworks depicting the Duke of Orleans – later to become the last King of France – travels to Lapland with an expedition in 1795. Beside’s the Prince’s heroic journey, these artworks also show how the French scientists took a keen interest in Lapland, as well as in the Sami people inhabiting the area. The paintings have never been exhibited in Lapland or even in Finland. Rovaniemi Art Museum’s unique exhibition La Laponie Mythique – Mythical Lapland, presenting Biard’s Lapland-themed works, will be open for public from February 22nd until June 18th.
