The program of the Helsinki International Film Festival – Love and Anarchy is finally available ! From the 14th to the 24th of September 2017, Finland’s biggest cinema event is offering screenings and conferences to celebrate the art of movie-making in all its forms. With 180 movies shown in the traditional film sanctuaries of Helsinki, the festival attracted no less than 59000 visitors last year. For its 30th anniversary, the event is dedicating a good part of its program to French cinema, with some of the great successes of this year. BPM (Beats Per Minute)-120 Battements par Minute

Directed by Robin Campillo

In the early 90s, while the number of victims of AIDS continues to increase, activists from Act Up Paris (an activist group advocating for HIV-positive people’s rights) are taking direct action to fight the general indifference. BPM is this year’s winner of the Grand Prix of the Cannes Film Festival.

Lumière !

Directed by Thierry Frémaux

In 1895, the Lumière brothers invent the Cinematograph and are shooting the very first movies of the history of cinema. Through a selection of restored movies, this documentary portrays the early 20th century in France, and delves into the technique of what would become cinema. A journey to the origins of movie-making.

Mr & Mrs Adelman

Directed by Nicolas Bedos

Sarah is burying her husband Victor, a formerly successful writer who had sunk into oblivion. During an interview with a journalist writing her late husband’s biography, she looks back on 45 years of a turbulent yet passionate relationship, with its joys and sorrows, with their complicity and arguments.

Pohjolan Enkeli

Directed by Jean-Michel Roux

Through this documentary, the director explores what it truly means to be Finnish. Meeting with the inhabitants of Finland, from Samis to business men, artists and farmers, this movie aims to depict the most complete picture possible of Finnish culture. The film is part of the official Suomi Finland 100 anniversary programme and will premiere at Helsinki International Film Festival.
