Small country is the first book of the French-Burundian singer songwriter Gaël Faye. It was published in 2016 and has now been translated in Finnish. French institute has supported the publication of the finnish version by a financing program. Both versions are available at our library. The story is told by a ten-year-old boy living in his comfortable expat neighbourhood in Burundi. Suddenly their peaceful idyll will shatter when Burundi and neighbouring Rwanda are brutally hit by war and genocide.
According to the author, the book isn’t entirely autobiographic. However, he has used his memories of local flavors, colours and music, and wants to emphasize the story of a broken paradise from the point of view of a little child.
