This autumn the University of Angers opened a new master’s programme in gender studies, in collaboration with four other universities, Bretagne occidentale, Maine, Nantes and Rennes 2. The programme is open to French and foreign students, and is based on distance learning. It favours a multidisciplinary approach to the study of gender and its social construction. The question of gender has been of interest to many researchers in France but was just lately officially introduced into universities. Around ten programmes of this type have been opened in the past few years, in Lyon, Bordeaux, Toulouse or Paris VIII.
