Spread across millions of square kilometers and almost devoid of human activity, the Arctic and Antarctic combine extreme isolation, harsh climatic conditions, and unmatched atmospheric archives. These regions\u2014where climate warming is occurring two to four times faster than elsewhere\u2014serve as key laboratories for today\u2019s environmental upheavals.<\/p>\n

But conducting research in the polar regions means overcoming major challenges: isolation, technical and medical self-sufficiency, blizzards, costly logistics, and temperatures that can drop to \u201340\u00b0C. These obstacles have shaped a model of international scientific cooperation, with each expedition contributing to a vast, shared global laboratory.<\/p>\n

On May 20 at the French Institute of Finland, three researchers from the Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research (INAR \u2013 University of Helsinki) will share their day-to-day experiences in the polar regions. They\u2019ll also discuss their research, from seasonal pollution in the Arctic to the unexpected role of penguin colonies in cloud formation, and the impact of mineral dust on albedo.<\/p>\n

Admission is free with reservation. The event will be held in French, but you can participate to the discussion in French and in English.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/td>\nLauriane Qu\u00e9l\u00e9ver is a postdoctoral researcher. Based in Finland for 10 years, she studies new particle formation in the polar regions. Her work includes field measurements (Antarctic Peninsula, Svalbard…) to quantify atmospheric nanoparticles and identify the gases responsible for their formation.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
