With the 2026 edition of Helsinki Design Week in full swing and transforming the capital into an open-air design museum, the French Institute is showcasing French and Finnish female fashion designers through its exhibition Crafted Connections.

To mark the occasion, a conference will be held at the French Institute on Friday 4 September 2026. It will explore the links between craftsmanship, fashion and design, along with their influence on major international fashion competitions.

Bringing together French and Finnish perspectives, this discussion will gather:

  • Magalie Guérin, Deputy Director of Villa Noailles and Artistic Director of the Hyères Festival
  • Sini Saavala, fashion designer and winner of the L’Atelier des Matières prize at the 2022 Hyères Festival
  • Clara Daguin, finalist at the 2026 Hyères Festival (Online, TBC)
  • Julia Valle Noronha, Professor in Fashion Design at Aalto University (facilitator)

Together, the speakers will discuss the role that craftsmanship and heritage can play in innovation within fashion design, as well as the fruitful collaborations between France and Finland. Drawing on their personal experience, they will also offer a behind-the-scenes look at the Hyères Festival, one of the most prestigious international fashion competitions.

The event will be held in English.

The Crafted Connections exhibition will remain in Stockmann’s display window on Aleksanterinkatu as well as at the French Institute until September 6, 2026.
