From special previews to classics — and including the brand-new Sheryl cinema — French films will be everywhere in the Helsinki region this November and December!
To help you choose, here’s a roundup of the screenings you won’t want to miss:
November 23: Hate (La Haine, Cinema Orion)
Thirty years after its debut at the Cannes Film Festival, Mathieu Kassovitz’s timeless classic La Haine continues to leave its mark on French cinema. Following its successful run this summer at the Cinema Orion, the film is returning for a second screening.
The film follows Vinz, Saïd, and Hubert — three young men from a tense Paris suburb — over twenty-four hours of anger and disillusionment, in the aftermath of riots sparked by police violence.
November 27: Special Preview – Private Life (Vie privée, Cinema Orion)
Be among the first in Finland to experience the new crime film by Rebecca Zlotowski in an advance screening!
At the heart of the film is Lilian Steiner, a renowned psychiatrist. When she learns of the death of one of her patients, she becomes convinced it was murder. Troubled, she decides to investigate on her own.
December 6 and 14: France (Cinema Sheryl)
At the brand-new Sheryl Cinema, run by students, you’ll have the chance to discover France, the latest work by Bruno Dumont, presented as part of the film series Two French Classics: Past and Present.
The film depicts the life of a prominent television journalist caught in a spiral of events that will lead to her downfall. Balancing drama and comedy, France seeks to draw a parallel between the personal and public crisis of a young woman against the backdrop of contemporary France. The film also serves as a satire of how television networks handle the news.
December 7 and 13: Breathless (À bout de souffle, Cinéma Sheryl)
Also at the Sheryl Cinema, you’ll have the chance to (re)discover À bout de souffle, a classic of film history, presented as part of the series Two French Classics: Past and Present.
The film begins when Michel Poiccard steals a car in Marseille and shoots a police officer by the roadside. In Paris, he meets Patricia, a young American selling the New York Herald Tribune on the Champs-Élysées. She takes him in, and together they wander from one bank of the river to the other, while he tries to get money from his former friends. The police are on his trail, and Patricia eventually betrays him. A story of love and escape, driven by escalating tension, with a fate that promises nothing good.
All the information about each film as well as ticketing will bee soon
