The French film of January puts the spotlight on one of the gems of French cinema history, Children of Paradise (Marcel Carné, 1945). One of the few major productions made during the Occupation, the film—written by Jacques Prévert—is a landmark of poetic realism. Just a few years after the era of silent films, spoken dialogue fully comes into life via the romantic adventures of Garance, a free-spirited and daring woman at the heart of Parisian theatre circles. Children of Paradise also stands as a testament to a film industry at the height of its artistic and technical mastery.

Synopsis: Paris, 1828. On the Boulevard du Crime, amid the bustling crowd of actors and street performers, the mime Baptiste saves Garance from a false legal sentence through his silent testimony. It is here that the ill-fated love story between Garance—a free-spirited and daring woman—and Baptiste begins: she intimidates him, and he lacks the courage to confess his love. At the same time unfold the intertwined passions of Nathalie, the theater director’s daughter who loves Baptiste, and Frédérick, a promising young actor who begins an affair with Garance, even as she secretly loves Baptiste as well.
