Frequently Asked Questions

What types of higher education institutions exist in France?
French higher education institutions can be roughly divided into three categories: 1. Public universities (equivalent to Finnish universities), 2. Grandes écoles (public or private), 3. Specialized institutions focusing on a specific field (public or private).

What are the requirements to apply to French higher education institutions?
Students who have completed secondary education (high school diploma or vocational certificate) and students taking their final secondary exams in the spring of the application year can apply.

What language proficiency is required to study in France?
For French-language bachelor programs, B2 level is usually required. Some bachelor programs require C1 level (e.g., Law studies). For master programs, C1 level is required.

How can I prove my language level?
With an official language test, such as DELF or TEF.
If you apply via Parcoursup, it is sufficient to be registered for the test during the application period. When you enroll in the university in the fall, you must have your language certificate.

Can I study in English in France?
Yes, especially in private institutions. In French public universities, there are few English-language bachelor programs but more master programs. You can explore the English-language study options in France via this link.

Is studying in France expensive?
Tuition depends on the institution and the student’s nationality. For Finnish citizens, studying at public universities is free (except for annual registration fees of around €150–200).

How do I apply for a bachelor program in France?

Public universities: EU citizens (and students from European schools) via Parcoursup, January–April. Non-EU citizens: via the “demande d’admission préalable” process, October–December.
