Science visits Helsinki – in French!
In 2026, come and discover research centers where the science and technologies of tomorrow are being developed as the leading scientific laboratories and infrastructures in the capital region open their doors to you. Through this series of visits in French, you can discover the major challenges of Finnish research and the scientific collaborations with France, in a friendly and accessible format.
All the visits are led by Francophone scientists working at the laboratory.
25 August 2026, 5:00 p.m. – Aalto University Ice Tank
This experimental facility is used to study the interactions between ice, waves, ships, and marine structures under polar conditions. It enables researchers to recreate cold-sea environments in a controlled laboratory setting, allowing them to test ship performance, measure ice loads, investigate wave effects, and examine the behaviour of offshore and coastal structures.
The presentation and guided tour will be led by Alice Petry, a doctoral researcher in the Marine and Arctic Technology research group at Aalto University. Her research focuses on the interaction between sea ice and offshore structures, particularly the ice loads acting on the foundations of offshore wind turbines, which are investigated through scaled laboratory experiments at the university.
