The Franco-Finnish Association for Technical and Scientific Research, the French Institute of Finland and the Association of Academic Agronomists invite you to a seminar on October 31st from 1 PM to 4 PM, in an attempt to answer the following question: how can the exploitation of forests be compatible with the fight against climate change?

Only in the last few decades have we become aware of the threat that man’s own actions pose to us and to the world’s ecosystem.

Forests have been considered the lungs of the Earth, they have consumed carbon dioxide and produced oxygen in the atmosphere. However, to meet the growing needs of industrial society, a large part of Europe’s forests have been cut down for fuel, for building or other purposes. The capacity of the Earth’s lungs has therefore decreased considerably meanwhile the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is increasing. The result is what we know as the greenhouse effect, or the warming of the Earth. The greenhouse effect, on the other hand, results in more frequent heat waves, storms, and catastrophic floods.

Some still forested countries, such as Finland and France, are dependent on the income from forests. How is the exploitation of forests compatible with the climate change threat? Forests can also store carbon dioxide; could they help humanity overcome the global climate change problem? The seminar will seek to answer these essential questions.

The event will be held in English, at the premises of the Association of Finnish Agronomists (Pohjoinen Makasiinikatu 6 A 8, 00130 Helsinki).
