TEF – French Evaluation Test

In contrast to DELF and DALF exams, the candidate does not need to choose a level before they register: TEF is a progressive multilevel test (from A1 to C2), and the candidate receives a result differentiated skill by skill. For example, the result of a candidate’s test may be C1 in reading skills, B2 in listening, B1 in writing and speaking.

This test is therefore suitable for candidates who wish to justify their language level in a precise and differentiated manner, skill by skill (reading, listening, writing speaking).

TEF provides the candidate with a certification valid for two years from the date of the test. This certification is recognised internationally by a large number of organisations, institutions and universities.

The certificate is available 4 to 6 weeks after the date of the test.

Description of the tasks

Different versions of TEF correspond to different needs:

  • TEF Tout public:  you wish to assess your skills for personal, academic or professional reasons.
It consists of five optional tasks with a total duration of around 3.5hrs (Listening, Reading, Grammar and vocabulary, Speaking, Writing).
  • TEF Intégration, Résidence et Nationalité: you wish to acquire the French nationality.
It consists of four mandatory parts with a total duration of about 2hrs (Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing).
  • TEF Canada or TEF Québec (TEFaQ): you wish to emigrate to Canada or to Québec and you need an official certification assessing your level.
TEF Canada consists of four mandatory tasks with a duration of about 3hrs (Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing).
TEF Québec (TEFaQ) consists of four optional tasks (you choose which parts you wish to take between Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing).
  • TEF Études: you are a student and you wish to enrol in a French university at a bachelor level.
It consists of four mandatory tasks with a total duration of about 3hrs (Listening, Reading, Grammar and vocabulary, Writing).
